High-Speed, Plastic Optical Fiber Developed by Fuji Photo Film

Fuji Photo Film announced in mid-January that it has developed a plastic optical fiber made of acrylic resin which has a maximum data transmission speed of 10GB per second. Also, the new optical fiber's installation costs are only a tenth of those of glass-made optical fibers. Sample sales of the new product have already begun, and a full market launch is expected for 2007. The company plans to manufacture the fiber at its facility in Fujinomiya, Shizuoaka Prefecture, Japan, with an annual production capacity of 2,000km, and it is aiming the fiber mainly at the residential market.
